Summer Blockbuster

With a new Nick Cage movie on it's way, sorcerer's apprentice, I am eagerly awaiting a review from one BRM writer.

For those new to BRM, please realize that Dutch masters has an unhealthy love of all things cage.

In fact, the best way for me to illustrate this love is by attaching the following video. Please think of Dutch masters as the Frog and Nick Cage as the monkey. hope this helps....

The man created three of my essential childhood bedtime stories- The Rock, Face-Off, and Con Air.

We should all be so lucky as to be manhandled that nicely.

Please explain to me why, if he is such a great action hero, he is in Sorcerer's Apprentice, yet was left off the cast for the Expendables? Which has lined up all the greatest action hero's of all time for the ultimate summer movie?

The expendables is for action stars who have used roids at some point in their career.

Caught the tail end of face/off the other night. I'd forgotten how good mr cage and mr travolta were in that movie.

Pretty sure that Bruce Willis, Jet Li and Statham did not use roids... There is a reason the Rock, Jackie Chan and Cage are left off the roster. Too many gay movies recently.

I say all of this with the utmost respect, as well as the fact that I have high hopes for the expendables, but Nicolas cage isn't in it because they didn't want him, and he's too good for it.

The movie stars the junky action stars of the 80's, and the guys who look and act like those guys.

Nicolas Cage is a different beast all together, a gut who cut his teeth making awesome movies like raising Arizona and then someone put a gun in his hands, and the rest is history.

And once again, all respect, but as cool as all the actors in the expendables may be, not a single one of the main characters has made a decent action movie.

I am not Counting Bruce Willis and Arnold because they both just have cameos in it to get me to want to go see it.

The man played Ghost rider.... he is in no way too good for any movie role out there. We learned that back in the 80's when he did Peggy Sue gets married! If they have a cameo spot for Bruce and Arnold, why wouldn't they squeeze him in?

Nic cage is not an 80's action star, he never stars in ensemble roles, and he didn't invest in planet Hollywood with arnie, sly, and bruce, so he doesn't owe them any favors.

He's part of the new breed of action hero- the one where ben affleck gets to be daredevil and Toney maguire is the biggest superhero in the world.

Now granted, he could definitely use the money, which is why you can prepurchase your national treasure 3 tickets.

The expendables party is just not one for the guy who was moonstruck and valley girl while other guys were Rambo or NFL players or mma fighters.

This expendables movie is the same one that couldn't get Kurt Russell or JCVD to join the party, so who knows what kind of quality were going to get?

He should've invested in Planet Hollywood, wouldn't have had to borrow from Johnny Depp to buy all those dinosaur fossils and shit.

DutchMasters said...

No, I'm talking about the planet Hollywood that went bankrupt twice.

It's buying private islands that will really cost you. Anyone who's played tropico knows you need to have some export in order to make investments worthwhile.

But you have no shame in making ghost rider 2, then you have no shame borrowing from captain jack.

Nicholas Cage is just another example of a man who's good at acting and bad at being a functioning person. He's a few bricks shy of a load, but that doesn't stop him from making some of our family favorites. Sure, he couldn't sell his castle house with a miniature railroad, but he did a damn good job in Con Air.

Is it in fact unfair to criticize a formerly great artist for his latter day sins (Kick-Ass?!)? Is it better to burn out or fade away?

Also, could we please look at some of his contemporary (non-action) successes: how about Adaptation? Matchstick Men? Lord of War? The Weather Man?

Or who could forget his amazing job as spanky the mole in the animated hit G-Force!
